Stephen Chung is an award-winning cinematographer whose work bridges documentary, narrative, and music-driven storytelling. With more than twenty-five years behind the camera, he began his career as a photographer in Canada and Europe before transitioning into film in the 1990s, building enduring creative relationships with artists including Feist, Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think, Metric, and Blue Rodeo.
His work is grounded in a collaborative, story-first approach, often shaped through long-term creative partnerships. His films and series have screened internationally and received recognition from the Canadian Society of Cinematographers and the Canadian Screen Awards. In 2014, projects he contributed to received three Canadian Screen Awards for Best Documentary, Best Director, and the Diversity Award. He is also a recipient of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award for his work on Mister Tachyon.
Selected credits include The Defector, Odessa (Cannes Short Film Corner), The Loneliest Race, winner of the Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary Program, and Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions, which opened the 2026 Hot Docs Film Festival.
Stephen recently directed and produced It’s All Gonna Break: A Broken Social Scene Story, earning a 2026 Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Editing in a Feature-Length Documentary. Across his work, he continues to be drawn to stories rooted in character, music, culture, and the relationships that bring them to life.
